Trade and Industry Association:[38]

In spite of the fact that the Chamber of Commerce had proved itself capable of redefining its role in the island's changing economy, it remained in the eyes of most a semi-government institution. During World War Two many local merchants were not happy with the Chamber's role in defending their interests and in 1944 they founded the Trade and Industry Association (VBC) as a separate private association specifically designed to promote the interests of its merchant members. Once again, Jews (Ashkenazi as well as Sephardic) were in the forefront, well represented in the founding, operating and leadership of the association. Today the VBC works closely with the Chamber of Commerce.
