Rond 1700 begon de ontwikkeling van de stadswijk Otrobanda op de westelijke oever van de St. Annabaai tegenover het Fort Amsterdam op de 'Punda'. De eerste woninkjes stonden aan de Waterkant. De Waterkant groeide uit tot het beginpunt, eindpunt en tegelijkertijd centrum van Otrobanda. In de volksmond werd het: 'Awasá' genoemd; letterlijk 'Zout water'.
Vanaf de jaren 80 van de vorige eeuw zijn er foto's van gemaakt. De oudste door Soublette, de latere vooral door Fischer.
In 1969 werd het plein getroffen door een verwoestende brand als gevolg van rellen. Heel langzaam herrijst het uit zijn as. Moge de toekomst net zo mooi zijn als het in dit boekje getoonde verleden.

The development of 'Otrobanda' on the westwall of the St. Annabay opposite Fort Amsterdam on the 'Punda' side started around 1700. The first houses were built on the 'Waterkant' or Waterside. This place developed into the beginning, the end and the centre of 'Otrobanda'. It was called :'Awasá' or 'Salt water'.
Since the 80s of the last century the square has been photographed. First by Soublette, later above all by Fischer.
In 1969 the square suffered severely from fires caused by riots. Very slowly it is resurrecting from its ashes. May its future be as beautyful as was its past shown in this book.
