Appendix V: List of Freed Slaves

Slavery was officially abolished in the Dutch colonies on July 1st, 1863. Of the slaves to be emancipated, out of a total population of 1877 people, 730 names were originally submitted. On May 26th, 1863 verification took place and 704 slaves were present, while 4 were absent (1 had Leprosy and 3 Elephantiatis).

After emancipation many former slaves left for other islands in search of a better life, thus have many names disappeared in the 125 years since emancipation. This list gives last names only and was given to me some years ago by Mr. Arthur Anslijn. Separate figures are for Separate households.
